New book: 'Idolising Children' by Daniel Donahoo, OzProspect Fellow

Popular opinion insists that today's children face more problems than ever. Kids are either obese or going on diets too young; suffering from ADHD or taking their studies too seriously. And the message parents get is that they are not doing enough to save their kids from these terrible fates. They are either too slack or too disciplinarian: they are lacking the superhero parenting skills to leap piles of nappies in a single bound.
In his new book, Idolising Children, 29-year-old father of two, and researcher/writer, Daniel Donahoo, wants us to have a new relationship with childhood. Donahoo argues that today's parents adversely affect their children as well as themselves through their obsession with extraordinary children and perfect parenting.

The book will be launched on 22 March at Eltham Bookshop.

It's time for community care to take centre stage

By Tim Watts and Tim Orton

Australian Financial Review

28 October 2006

In the debate about how we respond to ageing of the population, the politics and funding of nursing homes and hospitals generate a lot of heat. But what has been overlooked is the fragmented and under-resourced condition of arguably the most important service system supporting older Australians: community care. More details

NSW Young Parents Forum

In partnership with the NSW Department of Community Services, OzProspect ran 3 forums for young parents in 2006. The aim of the events was to hear young NSW parents' experiences of the service support system and to document their issues and ideas to help service providers better meet the needs of young parents. This project has developed out of OzProspect Fellow, Daniel Donahoo’s research into young Australian parents.

The three forums were held in Albury (22 August), Newcastle (31 August) and Sydney (1 September).

By Emma Dawson, OzProspect Fellow

The Age

8 September, 2006

In the media's rush to commemorate September 11, we risk overlooking another anniversary, one that arguably softened the ground for the radical retreat from tolerance that was to explode around the world five years later. On Tuesday September 10, 1996, Pauline Hanson's maiden speech sent shockwaves through Australia. More details

Left Out of the Debate by Convoluted Speaking

AS a writer and researcher with an interest in multiculturalism, I was momentarily excited last month to learn that a conference on the subject will be held at Macquarie University later this year. Momentarily, because one look at the call for papers on the conference website for Everyday Multiculturalisms deflated any sense of enthusiasm I felt.  Read more

Perceptions of Parenthood Need an Overhaul

By Daniel Donahoo, OzProspect Fellow

The Age

23 Feb, 2006

It is a real struggle for many mothers to return to work. But if we’re to get serious about what we want from childcare, we need to ask for more than just places. We need to consider why we don’t get the quality of developmental support we want for our children, and demand a more holistic response to the issues of work, family and balance.  Read more

Opposite Sides of the Cultural Coin

It’s doubtful that Joh Bjelke-Peterson and Al Grassby ever had anything in common, other than the day of their deaths.  While we might seem currently to be more relaxed and comfortable clinging on to the last fragments of Joh’s Australia, progress will out.  The multicoloured, multicultural, multilingual Australia with which I grew up began with Al Grassby, but it will not die with him.  Read more

Fund IVF, But Not From The Health Budget

By Sam Tormey - OzProspect Fellow

Canberra Times

2 May, 2005

Last year we spent $78.6 million in helping people to have babies via IVF.  That money comes from the same budget that we use for kidney dialysis, cancer treatment, heart attacks and strokes.  Think about that. In what way does being infertile make you ill? It does not cause any physical pain, does not shorten one’s lifespan or cause any disability. Read more
